Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments, including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation.

Chiropractic is safe for all ages as it uses gentle, effective, non-invasive treatment techniques. Furthermore, chiropractic helps to remove postural imbalances and biomechanical faults that can accumulate in our bodies over time. Our spines change and accrue damage just like our teeth, eyes, and heart. Left unchecked for an extended period of time, these changes may lead to pain, stiffness, or other more serious problems.

Osteopathic manual therapy is a holistic, hands-on approach to treating pain and dysfunction that focuses on restoring proper function and movement within the body.

It is based on the understanding that all systems of the body operate together to create and sustain health. Osteopathy views the body as a whole and aims to identify and treat the source of the pain and dysfunction rather than the symptoms with the goal of providing permanent rehabilitation.

An osteopathic treatment begins with a specific assessment to identify the underlying causes of the pain and dysfunction. This is achieved by taking a thorough medical history and by performing a postural assessment, orthopedic and other manual tests.

Treatment is based on this assessment and consists of gentle manipulation of the skeletal system, soft tissues (muscle, ligaments, tendons, and fascia), the viscera (organs), and the craniosacral system.

Orthopaedic physiotherapy is a proven, effective method of successfully treating muscular, joint, neurological and fascial symptoms and conditions. Your physiotherapist will work with you to identify the imbalances of these structures that may be contributing to your symptoms and will suggest a home program. In addition to traditional physiotherapy exercises, the physiotherapists at Octopus Garden are able to incorporate the principles of Pilates and yoga into your home program, if this is compatible with your current practice. Your physiotherapist may also include manual treatment such as joint mobilization/ myofascial mobilization, or acupuncture.

Pelvic health physiotherapy, a subset of orthopaedic physiotherapy, is becoming more widely recognized as an effective first-line catalyst toward increased pelvic and overall well-being. Your pelvic health physiotherapist has been specifically trained to assess your pelvic floor muscles in relation to one another and to the rest of your body as a whole, including your fascia, organs, nervous system, hips, and spine. Informed by your story and by an external and internal physical assessment, where appropriate, your pelvic health physiotherapist will work with you to develop an effective personal treatment and practice plan designed specifically for your needs.

What are the symptoms of pelvic floor imbalance? Imbalances occur in the pelvic floor in a variety of ways, and the map of your pelvic floor is uniquely yours. Our physical, mental and emotional experiences in this area, considered by some to be our ‘area of survival’, can deeply affect the optimal balance of our pelvic floor. Imbalances may occur as you move through the experiences of pregnancy and delivery or may occur in conjunction with disruptions in your physical or mental health.

Named after its founder, Dr. Ida P. Rolf, Rolfing® Structural Integration is a form of bodywork that reorganizes the connective tissues, called fascia, that permeate the entire body.

More than fifty years ago, Dr. Rolf recognized that the body is inherently a system of seamless networks of tissues rather than a collection of separate parts. These connective tissues surround, support and penetrate all of the muscles, bones, nerves and organs. Rolfing Structural Integration works on this web-like complex of connective tissues to release, realign and balance the whole body, thus potentially resolving discomfort, reducing compensations and alleviating pain. Rolfing SI aims to restore flexibility, revitalize your energy and leave you feeling more comfortable in your body.

The work rests on Dr. Rolf's insight that the body is more at ease and functions most effectively when its structure is balanced in gravity. Athletes, dancers, children, business professionals, and people from all walks of life have benefited from Rolfing SI. People seek Rolfing SI as a way to ease pain and chronic stress, and improve performance in their professional and daily activities. Research has demonstrated that Rolfing SI creates a more efficient use of the muscles, allows the body to conserve energy, and creates more economical and refined patterns of movement.
